Prompt: 10. Virgin No More

Maira bit her lip, wondering if she had forgotten to pack anything. She had all her hygienic and clothing essentials safely organized and stored in the leather travel bag she had brought with her when leaving home- running, a cruel voice whispered in her head, you were running and you’re a coward for it.

Maira stood up straight, shaking her head, jaw set. Yes, it was true. She had run away. She was trapped, oppressed, treated as inferior just for being born with a vagina, and uterus, and breasts. Her mother had been submissive like she was expected to be- completely docile and harmless, unless she was trying to instill the same values into Maira. In those instances, Anna George went from loving mother to nightmare from hell in seconds; in those instances, Maira would face anything from a slap to the face to being beaten unconscious and waking up in a bathtub filled with freezing water.

So yes. Maira had run. Run to gain freedom, to survive, hoping that somewhere in the world, being a woman didn’t mean you were treated as a second class citizen or someone’s property or anything but a human being and equal to all those around you, no matter your sex or… sexuallity. And wanting that, wanting to escape, that did not make her or anyone else a coward! Maira George was no coward.

Except….

Except she was. That was why she was still here, wasn’t it? Hiding in her room like a child, wanting so much to go out and get a treat yet too afraid to even walk to the door.

Maira sighed and sat down on the large bed, head in her hands and eyes shut tight. She wanted this, she did, but the way her stomach did flips every time she tried to force her legs to move… well, that had to mean something, didn’t it? Heavens knew the way her hands were shaking didn’t help her resolve. Still… Arey had said it was normal, that she had felt the same, and so had Amir; even the sisters had and Arey’s sisters were some of the bravest people Maira knew! So that meant that Arey and Amir both knew what she was going through, they understood her nervousness and would understand if she wanted to back out, even saying as much when they were discussing their plans weeks ago. Maybe…

No.

No, she was going to do this. She wanted this. Arey and Amir wanted this! They wanted… her. And she, them. So this was going to happen, no matter how much her nerves tried to get to her, how much she shook. They would do this, together. And it would be wonderful and terrifying and beautiful, all at the same time. She would be one step closer to the freedom she craved so much.

Maira nodded to herself and stood, grabbing her bag and slinging it over her shoulder as she did so. She looked in the mirror on the other side of the large bedroom one last time, seeing the determination that had set in. She nodded once more and turned away, heading towards the door. Fingers grasped the handle and turned, only one thing going through her mind.

Tonight… she would be a virgin no more.
